Yes, U.S. citizens can sail without a passport on closed-loop cruises (itineraries that depart from and return to the same U.S. port, such as roundtrip sailings to the Bahamas, Caribbean, or Mexico). However, we HIGHLY recommend cruising with a valid passport.
Required Documentation: State-issued certified birth certificate plus an unexpired government photo ID (or an Enhanced Driver’s License / Passport Card).
When a Passport IS Required: One-way cruises, foreign-departure sailings, and specific ports like Martinique or Guadeloupe.
Centsible Vacations HIGHLY RECOMMENDS that all clients travel with a valid passport for all international travel, including ocean cruises and land tours. While certain itineraries (such as closed-loop cruises departing from and returning to the same U.S. port) may legally allow U.S. citizens to enter using a government-issued birth certificate and a photo ID, traveling without a passport carries significant inherent risks.
Should an unexpected medical emergency, family crisis, mechanical failure, or weather disruption occur requiring you to disembark the ship or aircraft early and fly back to the United States from a foreign port or country, you will not be allowed to board an international flight without a valid passport.
